Chloe’s eyes lingered over Joe a little longer than they did Alan Cooper, making Morgan wonder what she was going to say. She pointed to Joe. ‘He’s familiar, but he’s too young. The guy in the baseball cap seemed older, different hair colour, it was lighter, more dark blond, and I feel as if I know him, but he wasn’t the one to drag me into that car.’

She turned her attention back to the photo of Alan Cooper; Morgan didn’t know how recent it was. ‘I’m not sure about him, he’s the same kind of build and height. If he had blond hair and a baseball cap on it might be easier. I’m sorry, I’m not very good, am I?’

Ben smiled at her. ‘No, you’re doing great. You’ve had an awful day and now we’re here knocking this late, disturbing you again. Thanks, Chloe, we’re sorry to disturb you.’

Morgan noticed the way Chloe was staring at Ben, her cheeks a lot pinker than when they’d arrived, and she put her head down to look away. His manner was always so lovely with any victim or with their families, and he looked so ruggedly handsome with his shaved hair and blue eyes that crinkled with genuine warmth. Chloe liked him, a lot, and Morgan couldn’t blame her because so did she. They left Chloe with the promise that they’d update her as soon as they knew anything.

Ben talked to the plain-clothed officer sitting in a car on the street near to Chloe’s. ‘Have you noticed anyone hanging around?’

‘Only me, it’s not a busy street and there’s not a lot of action to be honest. If someone does turn up, they’re going to stand out like a sore thumb.’

‘Good.’

He tugged the photos out of his pocket, and Morgan waited to see if he would show him Joe’s. She didn’t know the officer so maybe he was fairly new and wouldn’t recognise him.

‘If you see either of these guys, stop them and call for backup.’

He passed the printouts through the window, and the officer studied them, nodding his head.

‘I can’t say I’ve seen either of them. Are they working together as a team?’

It was a simple enough question, but it was one that blew Morgan’s mind, totally. She hadn’t even considered that as an option.

Ben glanced her way then looked back at the officer, who was handing the pictures back.

‘No, we don’t believe so at this moment, but we wouldn’t rule it out.’

‘No worries.’

‘Thank you.’

They walked away, neither of them speaking until they were inside Ben’s car.

He turned to look at her. ‘We didn’t consider that, is it a possibility?’

‘It could explain the murder and abduction on the same day.’

Ben was shaking his head. ‘We’re only showing Joe’s photo as a precaution. We’ve got nothing else to seriously suggest he was involved. If we did, we would need to ensure he was off duty. We’d have to tell him.’

‘Let’s go speak to Jade.’

Morgan didn’t want to face her again, not tonight, not when she’d had all day alone with her thoughts.
